Life of an English Major

It’s Over

Spring Break is over. Time to get back into the regular sway of things. I’ve really enjoyed the time off and the extra sleep, so hopefully it won’t be too hard getting back on track.

I have stories to read tommorow and a midterm to study for, not to mention my everyday classes. Then I also have poems to read and comment on.

On the bright side I don’t have to work tommorow, so if I work hard and focus on my tasks, I will be able to get them done. The tasks themselves aren’t particularly hard or complex, just time consuming. The most time consuming part will be reading the short stories for my writing fiction class. I’ve started them, but have a lot more to read. For each ten page story I need to write a ten sentence critique, which isn’t that much work.

I am done with the reading for American Literature, so now it is time to reveiw the past readings thus far. This is what I did last semester, and it helped a lot for the short answer segment of the exam. We are given quotes and then asked to cite the work, author, and significance of the quote.

The poetry critiques are not due until class on Tuesday, so I am not too worried about getting those done. Plus, I have plenty of time between class to work on them.

I can do this, I’m motivated, and ready for class to start!

Ready for The Office

I am so ready for The Office to come back.  They return April 10th! At first I was upset when the writers strike caused it to be delayed. Then I realized hey, these are the writers. They are not getting paid enough for their hard work and creativity. They are in the same field that I am hoping to be in some day. Why shouldn’t they get their fair share?

I am happy that the writers stood up for themselves. The accomplishments that they have achieved for not backing down will hopefully help all writers. Without the creativity that comes out out of their minds, their would be no shows. Instead of being taken advantage of, they took risks and stood up for what is right.

That is one of the big issues in our nation, the skewed distribution of wealth. The majority of our nations wealth is in the top ten percent of the nation. It’s a sad fact, one that noone seems to be doing anything about. The tax rebate is one thing, but I think that the government should be doing more to fix our declining economy.

Maybe if we made our own nation top priority we could successfully address the issues that our devestating middle class America. Actors and actresses makes millions of dollars while teachers are barely getting by. Minimum wage at a measly 6.15 and we are paying millions of dollars for art work at our state capitol. Everyone realizes these issues, but they are not getting fixed.

It’s hard to have faith in change at this point when it seems so impossible. Obama and Hillary have both been repeatedly stating that they are each the way to change. I am not going to hold my breath, but I am not going to give up hope.

Edith Wharton

I recently read two short stories “The Other Two”, and “Roman Fever”, both by late 19th early 20th century writer Edith Wharton. In “The Other Two” a man begins to frequently encounter his wife’ ex-husbands, which leads to a realization of her secret persona’s. I’ve been pondering the purpose of this work. It would seem that the female role represents the times struggle for womens rights and equality, for she refused to be held back by actions that would have no consequences for her male counterparts. However, isn’t this painting a bad image for society? Instead of lowering the bar for female behavior, wouldn’t it have been more favorable to raise the bar for men? I’m not saying that in this day in age it is feasible or desirable to do so, and I guess that in the early 1900’s it was also unrealistic. It is interesting to read fiction during this time period, especially by women, to recognize how it must have felt to be held to a higher moral standard than men, while having less rights.
